If you arrived here via my Squidalicious Holly Robinson Peete interview about My Brother Charlie, welcome! If not, please go read the interview. HRP is so wise and thoughtful and inspiring; I left the interview feeling re-energized about promoting autism acceptance for my son and his peers.

HRP is also very generous — she is offering one signed copy and two additional copies of My Brother Charlie to you lucky readers. If you’d like to win one of the three copies, please leave a comment below, and tell us why you’d like your own copy of this sweet, necessary children’s book. [Update 4.24: The contest is now closed; congratulation to the winners! -SR]

You may comment until 11:59 PM on Wednesday, April 21st. I will randomly select and announce the winners on this site on Thursday, April 22nd.

Here’s the official word on My Brother Charlie:

Holly Robinson Peete, bestselling author, actress, and national autism spokesperson, has paired with her daughter, Ryan, to co-author this uplifting book based on their own personal experiences with Holly’s son and Ryan’s brother, RJ, who has autism. In this story, told from a sister’s point of view, we meet a family whose oldest son teaches them important lessons about togetherness, hope, tolerance, and love.

Here is what Holly and her co-author daugther Ryan have to say about My Brother Charlie:

And here is Leelo’s little sister reading and reviewing My Brother Charlie, and also opining on how Charlie and her own brother are both similar and different:

Hardcover book retail value $16.99

I would love to win a copy of this book for my 5 year old. He has autism and even at 5 we are struggling with how to handle this. I have to admit, the idea of talking to kindergartners scare the bejesus out of me.

This book should be mandatory to be read at schools, libraries, and homes everywhere. It would prevent bullying or children feeling alone and unwanted, and promote friendship.

Comment by Tanaya

I would love to win a copy of the book! Especially a signed copy… I’m trying to think of a touching story on how it would help explain to my son, his brother’s Autism (which is true), but really it just boils down to I just really would like to win a copy. 🙂

we just found out that my husband has Asperger’s and so do my 2 boys. My youngest is like his father where they are just Star Wars buffs. I thought they were just SW nerds lol, but when it comes to social interactions, trouble with being disciplined( my son is very sensitive) I just thought that he was just spoiled by me and wasn’t used to being disciplined. My son accepts his AS, where I am still learning. He can teach me so many things( like the planets, science, SW) at 8years old that no other 8 year old can. If I were to read My Brother Charlie to him I know he would be able to relate.

I would love a copy of this book–my little girl will find great comfort in this book in a few short years’ time. (She is 1.5, and her brother with ASD is 3.5.) I think she will love that she and Teo aren’t the only kids in the world dealing with autism, that autism isn’t anything to be scared or ashamed of.

Comment by Vickie

You have a son names Teo with autism? Because I have a son names Teo with autism.

I think it’s wonderful that Holly’s typical child is such an awesome advocate for her brother. I want this book to show to my typical son to encourage him to find his voice in the autism community as a sib and advocate.

I think about siblings of kids with autism a lot, as I have two of those. I would love to have a children’s book that addresses what they are going through.

My daughter is 11. She has autism. We have been searching for a book to share with her class alongside our own experiences about her. My daughter wants to educate her classmates so she can be accepted. Thank you Holly Robinson Peete and all the other autism advocates!

Thanks for writing such an important book. Listening to your video gave me more determination in supporting my son in his quest of making sense of friendship and human relationships and building a few of his own.

Comment by Lea CD

I would like to have a copy of the book because I would like to know what is like to have a typical child at home & how it feels to have someone who child like nature to help an autistic child/sibling.

We have a 6.5 years old Daniel who has been diagnosed with Autism. We have no relatives around, no neighbors in the community who has typical child so Daniel will have a role model, whom he can “play with.”. At least through reading a book like My Brother Charlie by HRB, I could at least imagine and dream deep in my heart that Daniel has someone who could teach him how to play the truck, race cars, run with another child, how to play soccer at the point of view of a typical child. Thank you .

my son has autism and this has changed my life completely. I am glad that there are people writing this to allow everyone in the society to see how families like mine live through these…I especially owe a lot to my daughter who is the older sister. She has sacrificed a lot but is still so passionate for my son — she is going to high school next year and her dream occupation is to be someone who would be able to help others like my son!!!

Would love to get her a book as this one!

Comment by love_jeff

I want to own this great inspiring book because my son has autism and I want my daughter to understand what autism is and how she can help her brother.

Comment by ashima

I would like this book for my family and especially for my 10 year old Gage who has a lot of questions about his little brother Max’s autism. Someteimes I get to choked up to answer, he says, “thats ok mom, we’ll talk about it another time.”

I would love to have this book for my boys. We’re pretty sure my 3 year old has some form of autism and I think this would be a great book for us to read with my other son. He’s only 2, but I know one day before I know it he will be realizing that his older brother has some differences.

Comment by Amy

This gave me a much needed smile today. I can’t wait to get my hands on my own copy of the book. Too cute!

Comment by Christina Faria

I would love to win a copy of this book! It would be great to donate to my son’s classroom. We have worked very hard to address other students’ fears about his behavior and his seeming lack of interest and interaction. Many of them get it, but a few are still very wary of him. A book like this would help a lot.

Comment by bockychoy

I am going to buy 3 copies of this book for my son’s school library. He actually IS a poster child for AutismAwareness for the Kiwanis Club. Going public is liberating and your family is awesome for raising awareness!!

Comment by Kathleen

I have a son with PDD and a “typical” daughter. I think this book could help them. I would like to keep this book at my speech therapy practice. It would be available for the families that see me and for members of our Special Education PTA of Redwood City. (SEPTAR http://www.septar.org)

Yippee, Squid! Yippee, Holly Robinson Peete! I’m so thankful for what both of you do for our kids.
I’d love to get a copy of the book for M’s brother, B. Thanks, y’all.

I would love a copy to read to my son with autism as well as share with his younger/older cousins. I just got ‘Not My Son’ written by Rodney Peete, just need to get my husband to read! =)

Comment by Sherry Flamer

I am very interested in obtaining a copy of the book “My Brother Charlie.” I am a professional and advocate for children with special needs. I work with schools, families, and children to promote inclusion efforts and acceptance into the community through individualized intervention programs. This book would be a valuable resource to share with families and schools when talking about autism and ways to embrace differences in others. I have been following Celebrity Apprentice and have seen Holly’s passion for her charity and her son- I would like to be a part of this great cause to continue raising awareness and understanding. This book would contribute to my efforts in the field.

Comment by Marina

My son is 5 and on the spectrum. Great book to share with him.

Comment by Nicolette

I would love to win this book as I am a pre-school teacher and could share it around my school as we have several of these special children that attend there. The book sounds as if it is beautifully written and could be a big help to introduce this to young children. Thanks

Comment by Kim Rogers

My brother Joey’s autistic, and I love reading about sibling relationships. This sounds like a very sweet read.

Comment by Jaclyn

My sister collects children books and teaches early education and I think this would be an excellent addition to her collection to teach children.

Thank you for writing such an inspiring children’s book on autism. I would like to have your book because as a foster parent I have had many children with different disabilities in my home, and even though I have yet to foster a child with autism, this book will help me understand through the eyes of a child with autism what it is like for them. I will also be able to share My Brother Charlie with other foster children and foster parents, to remind them that we are all different in one way or another, but we all deserve to be loved.
